About the project
Learning-disabled people are often unable to tell their own stories without
the support of their loved ones. Over the years Noelle McCormack has
interviewed many mothers in order to construct biographies of people with
profound disabilities. She was inspired and moved by their stories.
‘Inside My Dance’ employs oral history interviewing to explore the journey
taken by one such mother, Angela Lane, a dancer and choreographer, who
finds herself at a point where she is ready to share the story of how being a
mother of a disabled child has impacted on her life and influenced her
worldview. This year long project is a collaborative process between Noelle
and Angela, during which Noelle, as interviewer and listener, is witness to
this telling and Angela has the opportunity to examine what is central to her
experience.
Not only does Angela’s story challenge normative views and assumptions
about what it means to parent a disabled child, but it also offers insight into
the experience of a woman raising three children, putting her career on hold
and having to find different ways to express her creativity. ‘Inside My Dance’
is an unsentimental, honest and personal exploration of coming to terms
with and integrating major life experiences, not all of them invited or
welcome.
The collaboration will result in a multi-media exhibition in which Angela’s
story will be shared with a wider audience.
