HKD – Ideas, Places, Things
Exhibition Designer
HKD specialises in design for museums, exhibitions and exhibits. The consultancy was
established in 2000 by Richard Houghton and Kate Kneale in the belief that exhibitions are
important places of social interaction.
Ideas – HKD is an ideas company. We have developed a range of master plans and preliminary
concepts for sites across the UK and Internationally. These include CELL (Centre for
Empowered Learning, Denver opened 2008), and The Centre for Human Dignity in Jerusalem .
We are currently working with Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum on their new masterplan
and with Coleraine Museum Services on the development of a new local history museum.
Places – Our core competency is the spatial design of exhibitions, whether in museum galleries
or new buildings. We believe in creating environments that enable social dialogue. We are
proud to have worked with Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and the Equiano Society on The
Equiano Project, one of the 2007 Bicentenary of the Abolition of Slavery projects.
Currently we are working with multiple stakeholder agencies on a new Lifeskills Centre for Kent
and we have just been appointed by the Welsh Assembly to develop a community heritage
resource centre in the Pierhead Building in Cardiff Bay .
Things – The display of collections and artefacts is probably the most important aspect of
museum design, yet often overlooked. Exhibits are the triggers that encourage people to engage
and discover and the development of individual exhibits is an integral part of the exhibition
design process. They can range from showcase displays to stand-alone interactives through to
large group interactive environments for thirty or more people to explore scenarios, vote and
debate.
